Many of today’s SHIFT members are grappling with a host of life transitions, SHIFT realizes there is an invisible “wounded work force” among our members.. From receptionists to CEOs, employees are struggling with both personal and professional challenges in their lives. The issues range from a myriad of situations such as sick children, elderly parents, returning to work after cancer treatment, a death in the family, promotions that require cross-country moves, struggling with the changes that come with retirement — with or without visible injuries.
The Heroic Journey Model has proven to be an extremely useful philosophical approach to build resiliency and help make sense of people’s life transitions. It offers a unique perspective on human performance improvement and change management. Individuals can apply this roadmap as a tool to prepare themselves for new challenges or to help bring them back from difficult experiences.
“My encouragement would be that people see everything that happens to them as a learning opportunity and to extract all the essence of the life lessons from them. It is in the context of our lives as a heroic journey, that we get wiser as we go through more cycles, and we have more fun, when we better understand our choices and the events in our lives. We become better leaders, when we do the “homework” first on ourselves…and then by developing better Emotional Intelligence, put more attention to how we can help others on their journeys.—Peter Bailey, Excerpt taken from In Review 2016, College of Business, Minnesota State University Mankato.
